A Year Over – and Many Years of Improv to Come
The 404s Improv Comedy Group Finish Their 2009 Season at the Bellerose Student Anime Festival
The 404s will finish off their seventh successful season this weekend, entertaining anime and genre fans at the Bellerose Student Anime Festival in St. Albert. This year has recorded a number of firsts for the famous improv group, adding new members, bringing their trademark improv comedy show to new venues and returning to their favorite anime
events around Canada. In all, The 404s have performed almost two dozen times in nine cities around the country, mostly in Alberta. As always, The 404s create their shows without prior knowledge of what they’ll be doing – everything is improvised with only the audience’s suggestions to guide them, and the results for anime fans is pure comedy fun in every show. The crown jewel of the season was undoubtedly the Megashow Meetup at Anime North 2009 in Toronto, where twelve of the group’s performers from both their main casts united for a weekend of great performances at that convention. This was the first time The 404s had assembled so many of their improvisers together at one time, and with any luck it
won’t be the last time the West and East casts (based in Alberta and Ontario) will meet. Also this year, The 404s expanded their company with two great new members based in Calgary, and with them have found a new focus in their practice sessions and workshops. While everything the audience will see is made up on the spot, the performers back up their skills with intense practice sessions and rehearsals to sharpen their wit and work together as a comedy team. Many of them also engage in improv classes outside of the group, all with the goal of making the show you see as good as it can be, and better every time.
Still, it’s in Alberta where the group got its start, and it’s in Alberta that The 404s always enjoy performing for the fans that got them started. This weekend at the Bellerose Student Anime Festival, you can expect The 404s to stay true to their roots as anime fans, spoofing new and classic anime series while playfully poking fun at the anime fandom itself. Looking forward to their eighth year as fandom’s longest-lived and best-known comedy group, you bet you can
expect a shovel full of more great comedy from The 404s!
